Liga MX Liguilla 2026 — format, dates, and how the playoff bracket works
The Liguilla (Spanish for "little league") is Liga MX's season-ending knockout tournament. After 17 Jornadas of regular-season play, the top 8 teams advance to a multi-round bracket to crown the Apertura champion.
Format for Apertura 2026: The play-in round has been eliminated. Only the top 8 teams qualify directly. Each round — quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final — is a two-leg tie: one match at each team's home stadium. The team with the higher aggregate score (total goals across both legs) advances.
Key rules to know:
- Away goals do NOT count double in Liga MX. If the aggregate score is tied after both legs, the higher-seeded team advances — no extra time or penalties in quarterfinals or semifinals. The final may go to extra time if tied on aggregate.
- Seeding follows the final regular-season table: 1st vs 8th, 2nd vs 7th, 3rd vs 6th, 4th vs 5th. The higher seed always hosts the second (return) leg.
- The regular-season champion (1st place) earns the top seed and hosts the return leg in every round they play — a significant advantage.
Apertura 2026 Liguilla Schedule Stages
The regular season concludes before the official quarterfinal pairings and kickoff times are finalized. Rather than treating provisional dates as confirmed, this tool adds each event when it reaches the match feed.
- Quarterfinals: four seeded home-and-away ties.
